Australian Unemployment Continues To Decline

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) revised down January’s unemployment rate to a seasonally adjusted 5.3 per cent, compared with an unadjusted 5.5 per cent.

52,700 additional people were employed in January with the employment total at a seasonally adjusted 10.966 million.

The number of people employed in full time jobs rose by 15,900 to 7.652 million, whilst the number of people who were employed in part time jobs rose by 36,900 to 3.314 million.

Market analysts had predicted that the full time employment number would rise by 15,000 during January, and that the unemployment rate would be 5.6 per cent.

The ABS report also suggested that Australians were working less, with the aggregate number of hours worked declining by 1.0 per cent during January, following a 0.2 per cent decline in December.

The total number of hours worked declined by 1.2 per cent from the same time period in the previous year, and was 2.9 per cent the all time record number of hours worked set in July 2008.
