CBA Computer Glitch Now Fixed.

A computer error resulted in money disappearing from the accounts of 200,000 Commonwealth Bank of Australia customers over the weekend which had the bank scrambling to fix the error and reassure its customers.

The error affected those customers who conducted a transaction over the weekend between Saturday and Monday. Customers had thousands of dollars wiped from their balances with one customer said to have lost as much A$ 17,000.

A customer in an interview with the Australian said the error had resulted in A$ 600 being wiped from their balance resulting in the customer being overdrawn.

“I was told the account was in the negative,” said the customer, who wished to remain unnamed. “I went on to the website and checked that I actually had made that transfer. I could see the transfer coming out of the account, but it wasn’t registering in the other account.”

“It looked like the money had just vanished. It was coming out of a Netbank online savings account, which means it can’t go anywhere but into another account. Consequently the account was overdrawn. It was all a bit mysterious.”

A CBA spokesperson said the issues cause had been isolated and identified and the bank moved quickly overnight to fix it. The spokesperson added that fees or interest would not be levied on customers affected by the problem. :The bank is reversing the duplicated transactions from customer accounts which will reinstate customer amounts to their correct position,” The spokesperson said. “Any customers impacted by this and who are seeking immediate cash should visit one of our branches.”

He said the error occurred because transactions were being duplicated due to a batching issue. “This is an extremely unusual event; we have identified the problem and are looking at ways to avoid a repeat of this in the future,”

Process duplication meant that all withdrawals yesterday had been done twice, leaving people with less money in their accounts. But the bank said today that the problem had now been fixed and all its customers’ accounts were back in order.

Though the bank has said customers who had incurred fees from the bank because of the error would be refunded automatically. Those who were hit with fees from third parties should contact the bank for advice.

Errors still occur in accounts, as recently I have had payments duplicated. I pay a/cs on bpay per telephone..then find same amount billed to me as a phone transfer. When queried, the bank has no responsibility, blaming computers, and to-day they informed my daughter that I should not use a savings a/c for bpay as “they were not suitable for such payments”! I have made my payments this way for many years, now I don’t know what to do! I shall certainly contact bank manager though.
