ANZ has become the first bank in Australia to offer its customers mobile phone banking, utilising the M-Banking secure mobile application.

The service - which will launch on February 11th and be free until December 31st 2008 - has been modelled on similar services offered and used by banking customers in other countries.

ANZ is expecting uptake of the service to be good, due to Australia having what the bank believes to be one of the highest technology adoption rates worldwide.

"More than 95 per cent of Australians have a mobile phone so providing mobile phone banking is just another way we are making it more convenient and simple for our customers to do their banking," said Brian Hartzer, managing director of ANZ Group's personal division.

The managing director added that M-Banking and TXT Banking, which allows customers to check balances and receive mini-statements via SMS, are "simple and easy to use" offering customers a banking service wherever they are and whenever they want.

A dedicated phone line as well as a 24/7 help desk will be established to assist customers with the new banking technology, in a similar way to the provisions introduced when ANZ internet banking was launched.

ANZ's decision to introduce mobile banking to its customers in Australia follows a positive experience with the implementation of such technology in New Zealand, where it has proved popular with customers aged 25 and younger, the bank has said.

The bank - which launched its internet banking service in 1999 - has more than six million customers, according to its website.
