Australian's do not place financial concerns at the top of their list of priorities when it comes to love, it has been claimed.

Following the completion of a recent study, HSBC in Australia has confirmed that when it comes to finding love, money is low down on the list of priorities as less than five per cent of Australians stated that they would reject the offer of a date from a higher-earning individual.

HSBC's findings are based upon a poll of 1,000 individuals across Australia.

The study also noted that a majority of those polled (90 per cent) considered financial stability to be less important than individual happiness and love.

"A healthy bank balance isn't enough to win the heart of today's financially independent Australians. Attraction seems to be a more important factor than wealth when choosing a partner," said Andrew Carruthers, head of savings and investments at HSBC.

"Research shows that today's couples are marrying later and after years of managing their own money they're not looking to their partner to give them a sense of financial security."

The bank also discovered that close to 75 per cent of respondents would also be willing to start a relationship with someone who was either out of work or had a significantly lower salary.

Established in 1865 by Thomas Sutherland, a superintendent at the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company, HSBC has its headquarters in the UK and was originally known as the Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation.
