They care about the environment and the human cost of capitalism, but they still use their bank account or credit card to treat themselves to the latest consumer goods - as long as they don't hurt mother earth, that is.

They are Scuppies - Socially Conscious Upwardly Mobile Persons - and, it has been claimed, they are becoming one of Australia's most influential consumer groups.

News.com.au says the Scuppie phenomenon began - where else? - in the United States, with The Scuppie Manifesto from self-confessed devotee of the lifestyle Chuck Failla.

Scuppies are environmentally-conscious and concerned with ethical trade like hippies, but like their 1980s forebears the yuppies, they also want the finer things in life and are not afraid to flex their credit cards to get them.

"I'm a professional. I'm ambitious, I like nice things. I want security and a degree of wealth. But I don't like to go after those goals in anything other than a socially conscious way," Mr Failla said.

According to a survey by the Mobium Group, cited by the Sydney Morning Herald, around eight per cent of Australians currently fit the Scuppie profile by actively seeking out ethically-sound products.

However, as much as 41 per cent of the population said they would be prepared to join them if such products and services became more widely available.

As a result, businesses may have to adjust their strategies as the growing army of Scuppies ditch conspicuous consumerism and instead start using their bank accounts or credit cards for products that won't cost the earth.
