Two of Australia's largest financial institutions have offered help to thousands of homeowners hit by recent storms in Queensland.

Both the National Australia Bank (NAB) and Commonwealth Bank have offered financial assistance packages to help people affected by the vicious storms which hit central Queensland earlier this month.

Customers with the NAB who have been affected by the storms will have their home loan repayment suspended, fees and costs for withdrawing term deposits early waived and credit card and personal loan relief where appropriate.

A similar package of assistance has been created by Commonwealth Bank, which also includes extra help and advice with insurance claims - in conjunction with CommInsure and a full review of credit card spending for no extra charge. All fees normally charged on transactions will be waived for those Commonwealth Bank customers affected.

Julian Pearce, chair of the NAB Queensland leadership team, said:" While the clean-up is continuing in northern New South Wales and southern Queensland our customers in central Queensland now also need assistance.

"We want to make sure our customers know that NAB will be there to help wherever possible.

"We would invite customers who have been impacted by these floods to contact us so we can discuss their circumstances and work out the best way to help."

Commonwealth Bank's Ross McEwan added: "The Commonwealth Bank is concerned at the impact of the flooding on families, farmers and business people in particular in the towns of Emerald, Longreach and Charleville.

"We've put special arrangements in place for our customers and our staff are ready to assist them promptly with their financial concerns and enquiries."
