Many travellers are failing to spend the points they earn on their credit cards in the most effective way.

The Courier Mail reports that there is a correct way to ensuring that frequent flyer points are used to maximise discounts but that this may not always be obvious to those taking advantage of the promotions. In particular, many travellers tend to spend them randomly rather than shopping around for the best deals.

Max Najar, director of Frequent Flyer Club, is keen to ensure that consumers are provided with the right information on how to make sure they get the most out of the points accrued through credit card spending.

"Our members are people who have frequent-flyer points or who want to amass them but who don't understand the complexities," explained Mr Najar.

He added: "By coming to us, they're getting advice from thoroughly trained personnel."

There are a few rules that travellers using frequent flying points can follow to help ensure they get the best deals. Firstly, concentrating on using one or two credit cards that offer points can give greater flexibility when it comes to cashing in the points because some schemes do not allow users to combine points from different sources.

Another tip is that airline flyers should make sure they fully research their flights before cashing in the points because some trips do not offer " a good miles-for-points return", especially if the flights have low-fare deals that could work out cheaper than using points.

Australians are set to see an increase in the cost of spending on credit cards and, therefore, making sure those points are spent in the most effective way could help to offset the decision of many companies to now charge customers a fee for using a credit card to make purchases.
