Debit cards are becoming increasingly popular in purses and wallets across Australia. Not quite rivalling the popularity of credit cards just yet, debit cards often offer customers greater flexibility and, for those who are short on cash, will only allow you to spend the money that you have. No interest rates and fewer headaches.

The ANZ Everyday Visa Debit allows users to make unlimited purchases and transactions for $6 a month. This includes shopping in stores, online or on the telephone. Fraud protection with ANZ Falcon comes as standard and consumers can start using their cards within five working days of applying for it online.

A statement on ANZ's website reads: "ANZ Everyday Visa Debit offers the flexibility of an everyday transaction account with the added benefit of access to the worldwide Visa network."

Meanwhile, another of Australia's major banks to offer Visa cards is the National Australia Bank (NAB) with its NAB Smart Card. The card allows customers to shop freely online, in stores and on the phone, while making regular deposits into the account can mean the monthly charge can be avoided.

Access to NAB Gold Banking comes with the NAB Smart Card and allows customers to use any ATM in Australia or overseas without having to pay additional fees.

A debit card from St George comes free when customers sign up to one of the bank's three transactional bank accounts. For the first six months, no monthly fee needs to be paid to use the accounts, provided there is a minimum of $1 in the account.
