When starting a credit card comparison, it can be hard to know where to start. The market is full, with so many credit cards to choose from it can be bamboozling.

However, for those who do not mind paying that little bit extra for their plastic friend, there is the option of a platinum credit card.

Platinum credit cards - also known as premium cards - offer extra benefits and discounts on a range of services, provided the consumer uses their card to purchase goods. The bonuses, however, do require a monthly cost, usually in the region of about $100.

Many of the major banks have their own platinum cards, including ANZ, Citibank and BankWest.

For a starting premium credit card, the St George platinum card offers fewer features than other premium cards, but at a lower cost. The annual fee is $89; it has a low purchase rate of 13.5 per cent coupled with 55 days interest free.

However, for the ultimate in premium credit cards, the AmEx Platinum Credit Card offers a slew of features, including a domestic economy return flight with Qantas every year, up to 1.5 reward points per dollar spent, travel insurance and VIP treatment at select entertainment events.

Whether you are in need of a personal credit card or a business credit card, your financial situation and the way that you intend to use your new credit card will determine the features that you wish to have attached to your credit card.
