Buying travel insurance "long before you start packing a suitcase" is essential to have a happy holiday, whether it be in Australia or overseas, according to an industry expert.

While many people who are going away from home are often wrapped up in the excitement of the trip, essential items such as travel insurance and health insurance should always be bought and checked before the journey happens.

Paul Clitheroe, writing for the Sunshine Coast Online, said: "What happens, for instance, if you end up in a US hospital and are presented with a pile of notoriously expensive medical bills? What do you do if your camera gets ripped off in Bangkok or you cancel your trip due to illness and face a loss of deposits and cancellation fees?"

Mr Clitheroe, who is chairman of the Financial Literacy Foundation and chief commentator for Money Magazine, added that travel insurance is "designed to compensate" for such incidents occurring.

Making sure the correct travel insurance is bought, however, can be tricky. The federal government advises travellers to make sure that they are covered for any eventuality, so that high risk occasions - bungee jumping for example - are included.

After recent events which affected travellers using London's Heathrow Terminal 5, a number of insurance companies have urged people going overseas to make sure their bags are covered by the insurance policy if they go missing for any reason.
