A motor and travel insurance provider has revealed the results of a poll it carried out to find out the most popular tourist attractions in Victoria.

RACV questioned policy holders from across the state as to where they would most recommend Australians and non-Australians to visit.

As it turned out, there could only be one winner - and car insurance would be an advisable precaution for anybody planning on following the tip.

Driving the Great Ocean Road emerged as the activity most locals would recommend to outsiders, in a survey which gathered 588 nominations.

"The Great Ocean Road was a clear leader for most of the online campaign and after more than 22,000 votes, it has been confirmed as the number one tourism experience,” said Neil James, RACV tourism and travel general manager.

In second place was the Audax Alpine Classic cycling race, which is next due to be contested on January 25th 2009.

Trailing in third place was the Ford Discovery Centre, which car insurance customers might like to know is the "leading interactive automotive museum", having opened in April 1999, according to the official site.

Making up the top five were Wilson's Promontory, located on the southernmost point of Australia's mainland, and the historical gold mining time of Walhalla.

Other attractions which travel insurance customers might like to visit in Victoria included the Blues Train Queenscliff, Skandia Week Geelong, Grampians National Park, the view of Mount Sturgeon from the Royal Mail Hotel and the Great Victorian Bike Ride.
