Choosing the right health insurance provider is an essential part of Australian life. There are so many on the market and you don't want to realise you've chosen the wrong one when you are most in need.

While still only a small company, GMHBA is not one of the most well-known health insurance providers in Australia. However, it has scooped many industry awards and offers competitive health cover for when you most need it.

GMHBA started life in 1927, when the Australian Cement Company instituted the Cement Workers Hospital Benefits Scheme - a health insurance scheme for employees and their families.

A number of similar schemes were introduced for workers in the area around the Australian Cement Company's base in Geelong, Victoria. The funds were merged by the mayor of Geelong and, in 1958, the fund adopted the name of Geelong Medical and Hospital Benefits Association- commonly known as GMHBA. The company formally changed its name to GMHBA Limited in October 2000.

GMHBA offers a wide range of medical insurance plans to suit every Australian. The hospital cover and general treatment policies are among the most competitive on the market, according to Choice Magazine.

If you choose an excess for the hospital cover and you are unlucky enough to have a child go to hospital, GMHBA waives the excess. Also, the company has a loyalty program - known as Connect Rewards - that can be used for excess, medical gap and topping up some extras services.
