As the global economy takes a battering, Australians could be forgiven for fearing the worst when it comes to their own nation's money matters.

However, it seems members of the public and the government alike are keeping their chins up and their hopes high when it comes to Australia's finances.

A report by Research International has revealed that Australians are feeling a lot more optimistic about their finances in these turbulent times than they were a year ago.

AdelaideNow reports that 38 per cent of respondents in the survey believe they are better off now than 12 months earlier, while 36 per cent do not feel there has been any change in their financial position.

Among the most likely to feel confident about their cash were the under-30s.

"The demographic affectionately known as Gen Y are the least likely to own a home, credit card or car, least likely to have children, more likely to live with their parents and more likely to be receiving pay rises and promotions year on year,'' the report said.

Meanwhile, on the frontline, the Australian government has pointed to a well-regulated banking system and measures to protect people with deposits as reasons for people to feel safe about their money, the Sydney Morning Herald reports.

According to the newspaper, deputy prime minister Julia Gillard told Sky News that the government has acted on "a range of fronts" to ensure the country's already well-regulated financial markets will be served by any new improvements.
