Australians will "never" be able to afford many of the houses on the property market, according to a stark warning from the Reserve Bank.

A wide-ranging report from the financial authority claims that the affordability problem currently gripping homebuyers across the nation is likely to continue for some time, pricing many first-time buyers out of the market.

The report claimed that the rising house prices - which have occurred over the last few years - have been a "mixed blessing" for Australians, especially for those who live within five kilometres of CBDs.

According to the report: "At one level, rising housing prices have made many people feel wealthier and have contributed to higher levels of consumer spending than might otherwise have occurred.

"But they have also resulted in concerns about housing affordability."

The Reserve Bank claims it has increased interest rates to reign in inflation and increasing house prices, but admits it may take some time for it to take effect.

As a result, younger people and those trying to get on to the housing ladder may find it hard to secure mortgages or other home loan products with property prices so high.

"Younger people who have not yet bought homes will be hurt by higher housing prices."

"Renters will be worse off when housing prices rise, whereas those who own rental property will be better off," the report said.
