According to the Federal Police figures, Australians are carrying 12 million credit cards around in their wallets and collectively they make around 100,000 card transactions a day.

And while these cards can be extremely handy when it comes to buying goods and services over the internet, they can also make rich pickings for fraudsters and scam artists lurking behind seemingly legit websites.

The blog lifehacker.com says that in a recent study by antivirus software firm AVG, 39 per cent of Australians were found to have been a victim of some form of "cyber theft", with five per cent of those falling foul of credit card fraud.

While credit cards were behind other common cyber theft problems, such as fraudulent emails, phishing scams and not receiving goods paid for through a website or online auction, AVG marketing manager for Australia and New Zealand Lloyd Borrett told arnnet.com.au that more education is needed in order to project consumers.

He added that Australians could be at a higher than average risk of falling victim to credit card fraud because they are more active internet users, with 99.5 per cent of home PCs being connected to the web.

Lifehacker.com says protecting a credit card from fraud can be as easy as taking the time for a little vigilance and using common sense when shopping on the internet.

First and foremost, the site adds, consumers should avoid "obviously dodgy sites" and should check their credit card statements regularly for any unusual or unauthorised activity.

If they do spot anything out of the ordinary, they should contact their card issuer as soon as possible in order to head-off any further fraud activity, it says.
